Sametz wrote A Child’s Requiem as a memorial to the twenty schoolchildren and six administrators killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT in December of 2012. The 45-minute work juxtaposes the innocent world of children (using their own words) with the more complex and violent world of adults (using texts of major American poets). A Child’s Requiem asks us to consider one of the most pressing social concerns of our time: how do we keep our children safe?
